UPDATED 06/11/12 5:48 a.m.

CHICAGO (CBS) -- At least eight people were killed and 40 others were injured in separate shootings in a violent weekend in Chicago.

In the latest deadly shooting, two people were killed and three others were wounded when gunshots rang out around 11:15 p.m. Sunday in a party in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.

Police say rival gang members were at a gathering in the 700 block of West 50th Place, when a fight started and somebody pulled a gun.

One man, Shondell Adams, 21, of the block where the shooting happened, was shot multiple times and was taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County, where he was later pronounced dead. Another, Jonathan Duncan, 22, of the 5200 block of South Racine Avenue, was shot in the head and also died at Stroger Hospital.

Three others were hospitalized in good condition. A 28-year-old man was shot in the arm and taken to Holy Cross Hospital, a 20-year-old woman was shot in the foot and taken to Provident Hospital of Cook County, and a 16-year-old boy was shot in the arm and taken to Provident Hospital.

Around the very same time, two men and a woman were shot a couple of miles to the southeast in the Washington Park neighborhood. A gunman shot a 33-year-old man in the back, a 27-year-old woman in the leg, and a 27-year-old man also in a leg in the 100 block of East 60th Street, police said. All were reported in good condition.

The latest incidents capped off a violent weekend in many areas of the city, particularly in South Side neighborhoods.

• At 2:20 a.m. on Sunday, Donnell Smith, 49, suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen in the 7500 block of South Drexel Avenue in the Grand Crossing neighborhood, authorities said. • Around 8 p.m. Saturday, Joseph Briggs, 16, was shot on his front porch in the 6100 block of South Rockwell Street in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood, police said. Shots were fired from a gray vehicle about 8 p.m., police said, adding that the shooting might be gang-related.

Briggs was pronounced dead at 1:40 a.m. at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

• In broad daylight Saturday morning, a man was killed and his brother was wounded when someone in another vehicle opened fire into their car in the Roseland neighborhood. Around 10:20 a.m., they were sitting inside a sedan parked on 111th Street near South Edbrooke Avenue when a dark-colored sport-utility vehicle drove up and someone inside fired shots, police said.

Derrick Wilkerson, 21, of the 11800 block of South Indiana Avenue, was shot in the chest and later pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, authorities said. His 19-year-old brother suffered gunshot wounds to the arms and was reported in stable condition, police said.

In all, at least 40 people -- mostly men -- suffered non-life-threatening injuries in separate shootings on the South and West sides since Friday afternoon.

The overnight hours from late Saturday to early Sunday alone saw 20 people wounded, many of whom were injured in shootings that hurt multiple people, police said.
