5 Arrested Following High-Speed Shootout In Gary
GARY, Ind. (STMW) -- A moving gunfight between two cars speeding south on Georgia Street in Gary, Ind., ended without any injuries. But five people, including two women, were arrested and a Gary police squad car was damaged by bullets Monday night.
Patrolman Nicolas Deem, a traffic officer, was stopped on the south side of the Interstate 94 overpass, using radar to check for speeding drivers about 7:20 p.m., when he heard gunshots from the north. Two cars then drove past him, with occupants from both cars shooting at the other. Deem's squad was hit, but he pursued the cars south on Georgia Street, stopping one at 35th Avenue, police spokeswoman Cpl. Gabrielle King said.
Police seized three guns from the car and arrested Erriana Gray, 20, Travis Jones, 21, Martel Marshall, 21, Michael Smith, 21, and Kimberly Winfield, 21. All were being held pending a charge of criminal recklessness.
Police towed the suspects' car and Deems' squad to be processed for evidence.
Detectives Cpl. Edward Gonzalez, Cpl. James Nielsen, James Bond and Daryl Gordon are investigating.
