4 Teens Shot In West Woodlawn
UPDATED 08/31/11 11:22 a.m.
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Four teenage boys were shot and critically wounded overnight after a shooting in the West Woodlawn neighborhood near Washington Park.
As CBS 2's Mike Puccinelli reports, police say the four teens – the youngest of whom was just 14 years old – were shot around 9:40 p.m. Tuesday while sitting on a porch in the 400 block of East 62nd Street, near Rhodes Avenue.
Someone in a silver car of an unknown make and model pulled up, and opened fire, police said.
All four teens were taken to area hospitals in critical condition following the attack, according to Fire Media Affairs.
The 14-year-old boy suffered a gunshot wound to the right thigh and was taken to University of Chicago's Comer Children's Hospital, police said. Two other teens were taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County -- an 18-year-old boy who was shot in the lower back and a 15-year-old boy shot in the left hip and thigh.
A 17-year-old boy suffered a graze wound to the left thigh and was initially taken to Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center, police said.
He was initially transported in fair condition, but his condition was changed to critical and he was transferred to Northwestern Hospital as of early Wednesday, according to Fire Media Affairs.
Their conditions have stabilized as of early Wednesday, police said.
Police said no one was in custody in the shooting as of Wednesday morning.
Later Tuesday just a couple of blocks from the scene of the crime, Mayor Rahm Emanuel met Wednesday morning with U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban development Shaun Donovan to talk about ways to revitalize the Woodlawn neighborhood.
The area is struggling, with three large apartment buildings all standing boarded up at the corner of 62nd Street and Rhodes Avenue.
The revitalization plan involves a $30.5 million federal grant to revitalize the Grove Parc Plaza low-income housing development, located at 61st Street and Cottage Grove Avenue a few blocks from the scene of the shooting.
The old Grove Parc development was composed of 504 units in squat brick buildings, spread out over a 12-acre site. Through a partnership with the nonprofit development company Preservation of Affordable Housing Inc., the Jane Addams Hull House, the nearby University of Chicago and other partners, Grove Parc will be redeveloped into a 965-unit complex of mixed-income housing, the Mayor's office said.
