4 Students Charged After Fight At Kelvyn Park High School
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Four students now stand charged with serious crimes after gang-related a fight at Kelvyn Park High School on the city's Northwest Side.
The fight erupted Monday on the second floor of the school at 4343 W. Wrightwood Ave., police said.
When police arrived, a female officer tried to break the fight up. One of the students, a 16-year-old boy, allegedly punched the officer in the chest, then kicked her and hit her in the neck and elsewhere on her body.
Other students came out of nearby classrooms to watch, and the fight continued while a second officer used a Taser on the teen who struck the officer, police said.
Four students were arrested following the fight, during which an assistant principal was also struck. Police say the fight appeared to be gang-related and the four teens arrested belonged to three different gangs.
The 16-year-old was charged with two felony counts of aggravated battery to a police officer and simple battery of a protected employee, police said.
A 17-year-old boy was charged with misdemeanor reckless conduct and battery to a protected employee. Two other male students, 17 and 18, were charged with misdemanor reckless conduct, police said. Their names were not disclosed.
Chicago Public Schools spokeswoman Marielle Sainvilus said Tuesday CPS has installed "additional security support to maintain the calm environment."
For security reasons, she declined to detail what that additional support entailed.
Kelvyn Park High School was in the headlines just a few weeks ago for another fight that prompted police to use a Taser. The fight on Nov. 19 erupted between a group of female students, one of whom was stunned by police.
One person was hospitalized following that fight, officials said.
