4 Killed, 36 Wounded In Memorial Day Weekend Shootings
CHICAGO (STMW) -- Four people were killed, including a 15-year-old girl, and at least 36 more have been wounded in shootings across Chicago over Memorial Day weekend.
The most recent homicide happened Saturday evening in the Fuller Park neighborhood on the South Side.
Garvin Whitmore, 27, was sitting in the driver seat of a vehicle with a female about 5:20 p.m. in the 200 block of West Root when someone walked up to the vehicle and shot him in the head, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.
Whitmore, of the 5800 block of West 63rd Place, was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:29 p.m., authorities said.
After he was shot, his companion got out of the vehicle and returned fire as the shooter ran away, but no one else was injured in the shooting. Charges are pending against her because she fired shots, but no one is in custody for the homicide, police said.
Earlier Saturday, a 23-year-old man was shot to death in the Portage Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side.
Damien Cionzynski got into a fight with two other males inside a business about 5:15 a.m. in the 6300 block of West Montrose, according to police and the medical examiner's office.
Cionzynski was shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. He lived in the 4400 block of North Nashville Avenue in Harwood Heights.
A few hours earlier, 15-year-old Veronica Lopez was passenger in a vehicle with a 28-year-old man in the 2400 block of North Lake Shore Drive when a black Nissan pulled alongside them and someone inside opened fire about 1:30 a.m., authorities said.
They drove to Presence Saint Joseph Hospital, and the girl was later transferred to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 2:59 a.m., authorities said. She lived in the 5100 block of West Fullerton.
The man was shot in the arm and suffered a graze wound to the head, police said. His condition had stabilized.
Late Friday, a 25-year-old man was shot to death in the Ashburn neighborhood on the Southwest Side.
Just before 11 p.m., Mark Lindsey was sitting in a vehicle parked near his home in the 3700 block of West 75th Place when a gunman walked up and shot him repeatedly across the chest and body, authorities said. Lindsey tried to drive away, but crashed into another vehicle on the block.
He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 11:34 p.m., authorities said.
The latest round of nonfatal shootings left 12 people wounded in separate attacks within about five hours into Sunday morning.
About 5:15 a.m., a 17-year-old boy was shot in the arm in the Roseland neighborhood's 300 block of West 108th Place, police said. He later showed up at Roseland Community Hospital and was listed in good condition.
A half-hour earlier, a 27-year-old man was shot in the right leg while standing on a sidewalk in the 5000 block of West West End Avenue about 4:45 a.m. in Austin. He drove to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, police said.
Five minutes before that, a 26-year-old woman was seriously wounded in an East Garfield Park shooting. She was driving in the 3900 block of West Wilcox when two gunmen walked up and opened fire, striking her in the back, police said. She drove to Stroger, where she was listed in serious condition.
At 3:45 a.m., a 23-year-old man was shot in the Washington Heights neighborhood on the Far South Side. He was sitting in the driver's seat of a vehicle parked in the 9700 block of South Vincennes when someone got out of another car on the street, walked up and shot him in the thigh, police said. He drove to St. Bernard Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.
About 2 a.m., a 28-year-old man got into a fight with another person who shot him in the arm and back in the 900 block of North Cambridge, police said. He took himself to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, though his condition was not immediately available.
Two men were shot just after 1 a.m. on a sidewalk in East Garfield Park's 700 block of North Kedzie, police said. One man, 21, was grazed in the back and and the other, 22, was shot in the left hand. They walked in to Norwegian American Hospital and their conditions were both stabilized.
About 12:30 a.m., two women, ages 20 and 23, showed up at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center with gunshot wounds to their legs, according to Illinois State Police. They said the shooting happened on the Dan Ryan Expressway but weren't cooperating with investigators beyond that.
Another Austin neighborhood shooting left a 37-year-old man in critical condition after a gunman opened fire about 12:20 a.m. in an alley in the 4700 block of West Erie, police said. He was shot in the chest, leg and arm and taken to Stroger Hospital.
In West Garfield Park, two men were shot on a sidewalk in the 700 block of Independence just before midnight. One man, 28, was shot in the left thigh, and the other, 29, in the left ankle. They were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where their conditions were stabilized, police said.
At least 23 other people have been wounded in shootings across Chicago since 9:25 p.m. Friday.
Last year, 12 people were killed and another 43 wounded in shootings across Chicago over Memorial Day weekend.
