4 Hurt In Vernon Hills Crash

VERNON HILLS, Ill. (STMW) - Four people were hospitalized, including two who needed to be extricated, following a four-vehicle chain-reaction wreck Tuesday morning in north suburban Vernon Hills.
About 5:30 a.m., there was a crash involving four vehicles in the westbound lanes of Route 60 (Townline Road), just east of Route 21 (Milwaukee Avenue), according to Vernon Hills police.
First responders found a vehicle had rear-ended another, forcing the second vehicle into a third, which then hit a fourth vehicle, a release from police said.
The crash involved three passenger vehicles and a pickup, according to a Countryside Fire Protection District official. Four ambulances were sent to the scene. Two people had to be extricated from their vehicles, according to the official.
The driver of the first vehicle -- a 41-year-old man -- was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, the release said. He was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
Both occupants of the second vehicle were taken to Advocate Condell in serious condition. No further information on their conditions was available late Tuesday morning.
The male driver of the third vehicle was taken to Lake Forest Hospital and released. The female driver of the fourth vehicle was unharmed and was checked by paramedics at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation.
