4 Dead, 22 Wounded In Weekend Violence
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Four people were killed and 22 others were wounded in acts of violence across the city this past weekend.
At least nine people were wounded in shootings Friday afternoon and evening alone.
Rodriguez was with more than a dozen friends in an apartment in the two-flat where he lived in the 2000 block of North LeClaire Avenue around 1:55 a.m. Sunday, when a gunman burst in and opened fire. Rodriguez was killed in the shooting, and a 21-year-old friend was left in critical condition.
Rodriguez's mother, Elizabeth Ramirez, wanted to talk with CBS 2 Sunday night, and tell the story of how wonderful her son was. She said he was a high school graduate taking college classes, and would do anything to help anyone.
About four hours later, a man was stabbed in the neck and killed during a street fight in the Bridgeport neighborhood. Police as of Monday morning were questioning two "persons of interest" in the slaying which happened about 6 a.m. Sunday in the 1000 block of West 34th Place.
Carlos Cartagena, of an unknown home address, was pronounced dead on the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
Also in Bridgeport, a 73-year-old woman was pronounced dead after being beaten in her garage. Virginia Prillo, 73, was found with traumatic head injuries at her home in the 3300 block of South Parnell Avenue, according to the medical examiner's office.
About 9:25 p.m., a motorist driving past an alley behind Prillo's home, noticed an open garage door, and saw Prillo lying on the ground between two cars after being hit over the head in an attack, police said.
Sources said she had just returned from visiting her husband at an area hospital and was found lying facedown next to a car that was still running.
On Sunday night in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood, Armando Aguirre, 25, was found shot in the back in the 2400 block of West 74th Street at 11:04 p.m., police said. Police couldn't immediately say why he was in the city, but said he had previously been arrested on the South Side on driving and cannabis-related charges.
In incidents over the weekend where the victims survived:
• Around 1:20 p.m. Friday, a 36-year-old woman was shot in the abdomen about 1:20 p.m. Friday. She was driving in the 8700 block of South Commercial Avenue in the South Chicago neighborhood, when she was caught in crossfire, police said.
• Around 2:15 p.m. Friday, 25-year-old man was shot in the left knee in the 300 block of East 69th Street in the Park Manor neighborhood.
• At 3:10 p.m. Friday, two men, ages 18 and 29, were walking in an alley in the 2200 block of South Marshall Boulevard, in the Little Village neighborhood, when a white Toyota Camry pulled up alongside them. The front seat passenger shot both men, police said. They were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital.
• At 4:13 p.m. Friday, a 57-year-old man was shot in the ankle and knee in the 7000 block of South Laflin Street in the Englewood neighborhood.
• About 15 minutes later, a male whose age was unknown was helping a person move in the 10300 block of South Calhoun Avenue, in the South Deering neighborhood, when a gunman came up and shot him in the leg, police said.
• About 5:30 p.m. Friday, a 20-year-old man was shot in the right ankle in the 3100 block of North Hoyne Avenue, a short distance from the Lathrop Homes public housing development, police said.
• About 7 p.m. Friday a 20-year-old man was shot in the right arm in the 2800 block of North Long Avenue, again in the Belmont-Cragin neighborhood, and drove himself to Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center, police said.
• Another 20-year-old man was shot in the abdomen about 30 minutes later in the 3900 block of West Wabansia Avenue, in the southwest corner of the Logan Square neighborhood, police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said. He was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in serious condition, while none of the others shot were seriously injured, police said.
• Around 12:30 a.m. Saturday, a party ended badly in the Douglas Park neighborhood when a teenage boy and girl were shot. They were attending the party in an apartment in the 3700 block of West Douglas Boulevard when shots rang out about 12:30 a.m., police said. Both were taken in good condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, where they were talking to detectives.
• In Englewood early Saturday, a man in his 60s was shot at 12:45 a.m. Saturday in the 6000 block of South Union Avenue, police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez. He was shot in the leg and taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition, according to Perez.
• At 3:30 a.m. Saturday in the East Garfield Park neighborhood, a 25-year-old man who was not the intended target was shot at Sawyer Avenue and Huron Street, Perez said. He saw two men arguing on the street and then saw one of them pull out a gun and shoot at the other man, said Perez.
The 25-year-old was the only one hit. He was wounded in the lower left leg and had been released as of 9:30 a.m. from Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center after getting there on his own, Perez said.
• A 16-year-old boy was shot about 5 a.m. Saturday in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. He told police he was standing outside in the 1400 block of North Central Park Avenue when a beige vehicle, possibly a GMC sport-utility vehicle, pulled up to him and stopped, according to a Grand Central District police lieutenant.
An assailant got out of the SUV and fired shots, striking the boy in the back once before fleeing the scene, the lieutenant said. He was taken in serious condition to Stroger Hospital of Cook County, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Richard Rosado said.
• A 16-year-old boy was shot about 5 a.m. Saturday in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. He told police he was standing outside in the 1400 block of North Central Park Avenue when a beige vehicle, possibly a GMC sport-utility vehicle, pulled up to him and stopped, according to a Grand Central District police lieutenant.

• In the South Shore neighborhood at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, a woman called police from the 2400 block of East 78th Street and said someone had shot her in the buttocks, Perez said. She was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in an unidentified condition.
• About noon Saturday in the South Austin neighborhood, two young men were shot in an alley at 615 N. Lotus Ave., according to police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez. They were taken in good condition to Mount Sinai Hospital.
• A man in his 60s was shot around 9:35 p.m. Saturday, in the 2000 block of West 68th Street in the West Englewood neighborhood. The victim was taken in an unidentified condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with a chest wound.
• Around 4 a.m. Sunday, a motorist was shot while driving on the Bishop Ford Freeway early Sunday on the Far South Side. It happened about 4 a.m. on northbound I-94 at 130th Street, after the driver and two passengers had left a nightclub in city where a fourth friend had been arrested, according to an Illinois State Police District Chicago sergeant.
A gunman in another vehicle fired "multiple rounds in the driver's side door" and the motorist was struck in the foot, the sergeant said. They exited the highway and drove to a Chicago Fire Department station in the Roseland neighborhood, where an ambulance took the driver to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn for treatment. The man who was shot and the others who had been in the car did not cooperate with authorities at the hospital, which called Chicago Police to notify them of the incident, the sergeant said.
• A 34-year-old man is in critical condition after he was shot multiple times in a minivan Sunday morning in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood. At 10:40 a.m., a man was found shot inside a 1999 Plymouth Voyager in the 6300 block of South Western Avenue, police said. It was not known immediately if the Western Avenue address was where he was shot.
The man suffered gunshot wounds to the back, arm and leg and was taken to Christ Medical Center in critical condition, Perez said.
