$300K Bond For Glenview Teen Accused Of Stabbing Another Youth
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Bond is set at $300,000 for the 17-year-old Glenview teenager accused of stabbing another teen, and whom the defense accuses of stealing an iPhone belonging to a friend of the suspect.
No mention of the cell phone was made by prosecutors during the brief court appearance for 17-year-old Mitchell Silverstein in Central Bond Court. Instead, prosecutors told Criminal Court Judge Laura Sullivan that the stabbing took place during a fight on the 1400 block of Scott Avenue, in Winnetka.

Silverstein, who is charged as an adult with attempted murder and aggravated battery, was clad in a jail-issue blue jumpsuit.
His attorney, Stewart Smith, said outside of court that Silverstein was merely trying to help a 16-year-old friend retrieve the iPhone, following a strong-arm robbery and said the decision by Winnetka Police Chief Patrick Kreis not to press charges relating to the alleged theft is a sign that he "welcomes robbers" to the detriment of those who try to protect themselves.
Kreis has said that Silverstein carried an illegal switchblade and that there was no justification for the level of response by Silverstein, even if a crime had occurred. Asked what he would have done if victimized in a similar situation, he said, "Call 911."
The father of the boy who was stabbed, Gerald Scully, appeared to take exception to Smith's remarks and gave him a straight-arm shove. Angry words were exchanged, but no arrests were made.
Scully later said repeatedly that "there was no cell phone," even though police have acknowledged that Silverstein and his friend said they were robbed and an iPhone is being held as evidence.
He declined to give what he believes to be the motivation for the stabbing, saying he wished to confer with his attorney first, but said Silverstein allegedly told his son before stabbing him, "You're done. I'm going to kill you."
Scully's mother Marion, told WBBM Saturday afternoon that the teen has been upgraded to good condition at Evanston Hospital, and is under heightened security, although she were unclear as to why. She said doctors have indicated that he could be released as early as Sunday.
Gerald Scully said the stab wound, had it occurred a couple of inches away and any deeper, could have killed his son. As it is, he said, his son suffered a collapsed lung.
The teen who alleged that his cell phone was stolen was the second teen who suffered a wound, but police have said that the wound to the hand occurred when the teen tried to disarm Silverstein. That teen was treated and released Thursday night from Evanston Hospital.
