30-year-old man killed in Gurnee ATV crash
(GURNEE) A 30-year-old north suburban man was killed Tuesday when the all-terrain vehicle he was riding flipped over and he struck a utility pole.
About 2 p.m. Tuesday, Gurnee police responded to an accident involving an ATV and a utility pole near the intersection of Magnolia and Pacific avenues, according to a release from police.
Officers arrived to find a male performing CPR on a man lying on the ground. The officer deployed an automatic external defibrillator and administered a shock to regain a pulse.
The victim, who was the sole rider of the ATV, was taken to Vista Medical Center-East in Waukegan by Gurnee Fire Dept. paramedics. Terry E. Matthews, 30, of 3759 Grandmore Ave. in Gurnee, was pronounced dead there at 3:12 p.m., police said.
Witnesses told police they saw the ATV traveling southbound on the west side of Magnolia in the right-of-way area off the street. Matthews appeared to lose control and the ATV flipped. He was ejected and struck a utility pole. No one else was injured and no other property was damaged, the release said.
The accident remains under investigation as of Wednesday morning. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday by the Lake County Coroner's office.
