3-Year-Old Boy Killed, Mom Injured In Domestic Stabbing
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 3-year-old boy was stabbed to death, and his mother was injured, in a domestic dispute Friday in the North Austin neighborhood.
Around 11:15 a.m., police were notified of a domestic disturbance at 5034 W. Division St., according to a Grand Central District police lieutenant. The toddler and her mother were stabbed by a man inside home, police said.
Relatives of the victims say the man who fatally stabbed the child is the 3-year-old's father. Police would only say they were questioning a person of interest in the case.
The 28-year-old mother began screaming sometime around 11 a.m. After she was stabbed, she tried to get away from her attacker by jumping through a second-floor window.
"A whole bloody arm came out the window," witness Randy Johnson said. "He was trying to drag her in. She was holding onto the window. And you could see the knife."
Leslie Scott, a relative, said the mother told her after she escaped that the baby's father had the child upstairs and was going to retaliate by killing the 3-year-old.
Witnesses say when police arrived they went into the apartment looking for the suspect but he had fled. The suspect hid in a garage, but was quickly captured.
The boy -- identified as Jaivon Sandifer -- was pronounced dead at 12:18 p.m at John H. Stroger Hospital of Cook County, according to a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
