3 Teens Among 12 Hurt In Shootings Since Friday Night
CHICAGO (CBS) - Three teenage boys -- one as young as 14 -- were among at least 12 people hurt in separate shootings across the city Friday night.
The 14-year-old boy was standing on the sidewalk in the 12400 block of South Perry at 8:34 p.m. when the shooter walked out from between two houses and opened fire, police said.
He was shot in the back and leg and was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in "stable" condition, police said.
Two other teen boys -- ages 16 and 18 -- are in good condition after a shooting about 11:10 p.m. in the 700 block of West 51st Street, police said. The younger boy was shot in the hand and taken to St. Bernard Hospital and Health Care Centers, while the older teen was shot in the leg.
The evening's first shooting happened about 5:30 p.m. in the 4600 block of North Malden Street, police said. A 21-year-old man was wounded and taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in stable condition.
Later in the evening, a roughly three-hour time span saw eight people -- including the teenagers -- wounded in South and Southwest side attacks.
About 10 p.m., a 20-year-old man was shot in the 10600 block of South Perry Avenue and taken to Roseland Community Hospital in stable condition, police said, though the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear.
Another man man, 36, was shot in a Southwest Side alley. The man was in the 3500 block of West 51st Street at 10:15 p.m. when someone drove past him in an alley, then got out of the car and fired several shots at him, police said.
He was shot in the shoulder and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was listed in good condition, police said.
About 15 minutes later, a 21-year-old man was shot in the knee while sitting on a porch in the South Side Woodlawn neighborhood, police said. Two male suspects fired at him from across the street in the 6500 block of South Minerva Avenue. The man was taken to Stroger Hospital where he is listed in good condition.
About 11:45 p.m., two men -- ages 21 and 23 -- were shot in a gangway in the 7200 block of South Ridgeway Avenue and taken in good condition ot Holy Cross Hospital, police said.
About 1:45 a.m., a 51-year-old man was shot near the intersection of West Division Street and North Maplewood Avenue, police said. Details about the shooting were not immediately available.
About 2:30 a.m., a male was shot in the leg in the 8200 block of South Langley Avenue, police said.
About 3:10 a.m., a 38-year-old man was shot in the leg near the intersection of East 56th Street and South Wabash Avenue, police said.
No one is in custody for any of the shootings early Saturday, but area detectives are investigating.
Frustration with the continuing violence was aired Saturday evening on Phillip Jackson's WVON radio show, "The Parent Revolution," which featured young men talking about some of the root causes, including unemployment.
Jackson, a community activist, expressed disappointment in the Chicago Police Department.
"So far, what the city has done, what the state has done, what the police have done has not worked to stop the violence or even to reduce the violence in the city of Chicago. It's out of control," he said.
Meanwhile, the Rev. Paul Jakes held a "Faith Walk" against violence.
"We needed to show our love and concern, to help heal our community, to increase the peace, to stop the violence that is raging all throughout the city," Jakes told CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot.
The police department says it welcomes the opportunity to work with community organizations to make the city safer.
