3 shot, 1 killed after gunfire enters through window of home on Chicago's South Side
CHICAGO (CBS) – One person was killed, and two were others injured, in a shooting inside a home in the South Side's Greater Grand Crossing community early Monday.
As CBS 2's Shardaa Gray reported, it all happened less than an hour into the New Year.
Chicago Police responded were called to the 7000 block of South Wabash Avenue just before 1 a.m., where they found the victims who had been struck by gunfire.
Neighbors told us they heard more than a dozen gunshots. On video at the scene, officers were seen talking to a small child at one point in front of the house where the shooting happened.
As CBS 2's Asal Rezaei reported, a 49-year-old woman was shot in the head and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition. A 48-year-old woman was struck in the arm and was also taken to U of C in fair condition.
The third victim, a 53-year-old man, was shot multiple times in the body and was pronounced dead on the scene.
Hours later, detectives were back at the house conducting their investigation. We noticed several bullet holes in the window, and the glass front door was shattered.
Police believe the gunfire came from outside, and the bullets went through the windows and struck the victims – who were all in the living room at the time.
One neighbor described what she saw following the shooting.
"I was hearing all the gunshots from, you know, them shooting on New Year's, but the gunshots I heard then sounded was real close. So then, when I saw all the lights and stuff from the police, she said. "That's when I looked out the window, and I saw all the police and the tape."
Another neighbor we spoke with, who did not want to be on camera, said believes the shooting was targeted.
Community activist Andrew Holmes says children may have been inside the home then.
"We understand there may have been children inside of this home, but detectives are still looking, still trying to find out exactly what happened," he said.
No arrests have been made. Area 1 detectives are investigating.
