3 Officers Hurt In Crash While Racing To Help Sergeant In Shooting
CHICAGO (STMW) -- Three Chicago police officers were hospitalized Sunday night after they crashed a squad car while speeding to the scene of a police-involved shooting.
Minutes before the 8:30 p.m. crash in the Roseland neighborhood, a Chicago police sergeant shot a man who pointed a gun at him in the 10000 block of South State Street, according to a statement from Police News Affairs.
Police said the sergeant was headed to a domestic disturbance on the Far South Side when he saw two people firing guns at each other.
When one of the shooters pointed a gun at the sergeant, he opened fire, striking the gunman in the foot, police said. A weapon was recovered at the scene.
The man, whose age was not known, was taken to Roseland Community Hospital in good condition, the fire department said.
Meanwhile, the three officers were speeding to the sergeant's aid when they crashed their cruiser on the same block as the shooting, police confirmed.
The officers were taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital and Health Care Centers in Evergreen Park in good condition, the fire department said.
The Independent Police Review Authority is conducting an investigation.
