7 Killed, 13 Wounded In Thanksgiving Weekend Shootings
(CBS) -- Seven people were killed and at least 13 others have been wounded in Thanksgiving weekend shootings across Chicago.
The most recent fatal shooting happened early Sunday in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side.
About 12:20 a.m., Maurice Jackson, 27, from Minneapolis, was sitting in parked Dodge with his girlfriend in the 5300 block of South Union when a male got out of a dark car and opened fire, authorities said.
The Dodge sped southbound on Union, struck a fire hydrant and then crashed into a tree in the 700 block of West Garfield, police said.
Jackson was shot in the left side of his body, authorities said. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:15 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
His girlfriend, a 32-year-old woman, suffered a graze wound to the left hip and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where her condition was stabilized, police said.
"This is a tragedy, this child did not mess with nobody," said Jackson's aunt, Sabrina Taylor, adding that he was a father of three who worked in a factory and was an aspiring rapper.
"They killed the wrong child, this boy didn't do nothing to nobody," she said. "He don't even live in Chicago."
About 9:55 p.m. Saturday, a man was fatally shot in the Little Village neighborhood on the Southwest Side.
Carlos Romo, 32, was found unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the chest in a parked van about 8:55 p.m. in the 2700 block of West 24th Street, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.
Romo, who lived on the same block as the shooting, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:18 p.m., according to the medical examiner's office.
About five hours earlier, a 26-year-old man was killed in a West Englewood neighborhood shooting on the South Side.
Shortly after 5 p.m., Tyris Washington was in the backyard of a home in the 6600 block of South Marshfield when someone got out of a vehicle, walked up and started shooting, according to police and the medical examiner's office.
Washington suffered wounds to the abdomen and hand and was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:45 p.m., authorities said. His home address was unknown.
Friday afternoon, a 36-year-old man was gunned down in the West Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side.
Hommy Vega was sitting in a vehicle about 1:20 p.m. in the 0-100 block of North Hamlin Boulevard when someone fired shots, hitting him in the right side of the chest, authorities said.
Vega, of the 1300 block of West Chicago Avenue, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:58 p.m., authorities said.
A man died about four hours after a shooting in the South Side Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood early Friday.
Christopher Williams, 31, was walking in the 7800 block of South Maryland about 1:30 a.m. when someone got out of an SUV and shot him several times, authorities said.
Williams, of the 800 block of East 78th Street, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died at 5 a.m., authorities said.
In a Thanksgiving Day shooting, a 23-year-old man was killed in the West Ridge neighborhood on the North Side.
Jontaye Walker was standing outside in the 2200 block of West Thome Avenue about 1:15 p.m. Thursday when someone got out of a vehicle, walked up and opened fire, authorities said. The shooter then jumped into a dark green minivan, which sped away northbound.
Walker, of the 6200 block of North Bell Avenue, suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the head and body and died at the scene minutes later, authorities said.
The holiday weekend's first fatal shooting occurred Wednesday night in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side.
Just before midnight, two people walked up to 16-year-old Mysean Dunning near his home in the 3300 block of West Van Buren Street and shot him in the head, authorities said. He was dead at the scene.
The most recent nonfatal attack happened early Sunday in the Garfield Ridge neighborhood on the Southwest Side.
Around 5:40 a.m., a 22-year-old man was standing in the 6000 block of South Archer when someone walked up and opened fire, police said. The man was shot in both hands and the groin and taken to Christ Medical Center, where he was listed in serious condition, police said.
At least 11 other people have been wounded in separate attacks since 10:15 p.m. Wednesday.
