3 Killed, 23 Wounded In Monday Shootings Across Chicago
CHICAGO (STMW) -- Three men were killed and at least 23 other people were wounded in shootings Monday across Chicago.
About 10:45 p.m., a man was killed in an Englewood neighborhood drive-by shooting on the South Side, police said.
The 21-year-old was walking in the 5600 block of South May when a black car drove by and someone inside opened fire, according to Chicago Police.
He was shot in the left side and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
About 90 minutes earlier, one man was killed and another was wounded in a shooting in the West Side Austin neighborhood, police said.
The men, ages 21 and 28, were both shot about 9:15 p.m. in the 4500 block of West Gladys, according to Chicago Police.
The 28-year-old was shot multiple times and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
The younger man suffered a graze wound to the buttocks and took himself to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where his condition was stabilized.
The Cook County medical examiner's office could not immediately confirm either fatality early Tuesday.
Earlier Monday, an 18-year-old man was found shot to death in the South Side Englewood neighborhood.
Officers found the man dead with gunshot wounds to the head and hand shortly before noon inside a car parked in the 6500 block of South Ross, police said. The medical examiner's office has not yet released his name.
The latest nonfatal shooting happened just before midnight in a separate Englewood neighborhood attack.
A 38-year-old man was shot in the back in the 5500 block of South Shields, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was listed in fair condition. Additional information was not immediately available.
Less than an hour earlier, five men were shot in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side. The group was standing outside about 11:35 p.m. in the 3200 block of West Congress when shots rang out, police said. A 32-year-old man suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital. Another man, 28, was shot in the mouth and also taken to Sinai in good condition. A 33-year-old man was shot in the left foot: a 32-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the buttocks; and a 34-year-old man was shot in the left arm, police said. They were all taken to Stroger Hospital, where each man was listed in good condition.
About 10:10 p.m., a 17-year-old boy was shot in the leg in East Garfield Park's 3100 block of West Monroe, police said. He was taken in serious condition to Mount Sinai Hospital.
About 9:30 p.m., three people were shot in Austin. A 16-year-old boy, 21-year-old man and 43-year-old woman were all shot in the 300 block of North Pine, police said. The woman suffered gunshot wounds to the back and right arm and was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where her condition was stabilized. The teenager was shot in the right leg, while the older man was shot in the left leg. They were both taken to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, but their conditions were not immediately known.
About that same time, a 33-year-old woman suffered a graze wound to the leg in the 600 block of West 43rd Place in the South Side Canaryville neighborhood, police said. She refused medical attention.
Ten minutes earlier, a 26-year-old man was shot in another Englewood neighborhood attack. He was in the 7500 block of South Union about 9:20 p.m. when someone walked up and shot him in the leg, police said. He took himself to the University of Chicago Medical Center, but his condition was not immediately known.
About that same time, a man was shot in the Gage Park neighborhood on the South Side. The 19-year-old was riding a bicycle in the 5000 block of South Western about 9:20 p.m. when a white car pulled up next to him and someone inside shot him several times, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition stabilized.
Shortly before 5:30 p.m., a man and woman were shot in the West Englewood neighborhood on the South Side. The 31-year-old woman and 22-year-old man were sitting in front of a home in the 5700 block of South Bishop when a gray vehicle pulled up and several people got out and opened fire, police said. She was shot in the ankle and taken in good condition to St. Bernard Hospital, while the man was shot in the back and taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.
At 5:03 p.m., a 33-year-old woman heard gunfire and realized she'd been shot in the hand in the Bronzeville neighborhood's 3800 block of South Rhodes, police said. She was taken to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center in good condition.
Ten minutes earlier in Austin, a 19-year-old man was shot in the right calf in the 5600 block of West Division. He took himself to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, where he was listed in good condition, police said.
About 1:45 p.m., an 18-year-old man was shot in the shoulder while standing on a corner in the 1900 block of South St. Louis Avenue in the North Lawndale neighborhood on the Southwest Side. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, police said.
Within the hour, a 20-year-old man was shot in the leg in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood on the Southwest Side. He was walking in the 6700 block of South Artesian about 1 p.m. when he heard shots and felt pain, police said. He was listed in good condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
About 11:45 a.m., a 26-year-old man was critically wounded in a Woodlawn neighborhood shooting on the South Side, police said. A friend drove him to the University of Chicago Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the lower back after the attack in the 400 block of East 62nd Street, and he was transferred to Mount Sinai in critical condition.
Just before 9 a.m., a 28-year-old man was shot in the foot while driving in the 3400 block of West Huron in the West Side Humboldt Park neighborhood, police said. He kept going to Mount Sinai, where he was listed in good condition.
Monday's first shooting happened about 3 a.m. in East Garfield Park, where a 22-year-old man was hit in the left leg while standing outside in the 3000 block of West Walnut, police said. His condition was stabilized at Stroger Hospital.
The violence followed a weekend that saw seven people killed and 35 wounded in shootings across the city.
