3 Dead, 5 Wounded In Overnight Shootings In Chicago
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Three people were killed and five more were injured by gunfire in Chicago overnight – including a pregnant woman, and a teenage boy who was shot for the second time in a month.
The woman was wounded in her left breast and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where her condition was reported as stable Thursday morning. Her wound was not life-threatening, and her unborn baby was not hurt, police said.
The boy was taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County in stable condition, police said. This was the second time he had been shot in just the past month.
As of early Thursday, Area Central detectives were questioning a person of interest, police said.
Around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, Grand Crossing District officers were patrolling the 6300 block of South King Drive when they saw the gunman shoot Tony Dunn, 19. When officers came to the scene, the man began firing at them, police said.
Police returned fire and wounded the man in the leg, but he fled. He was later apprehended and taken to a nearby hospital, police said.
Dunn, who lived on the block where the incident happened, suffered a gunshot wound to the back and was later pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital of Cook County, according to the county Medical Examiner's office.
In another incident around 1 a.m., police found Levertis Williams, 48, dead of a gunshot wound to the head on the sidewalk in the Park Manor neighborhood.
Williams was dead at the scene in the 6800 block of South Prairie Avenue, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
And around 3:45 a.m., officers responding to a call of shots fired in the West Englewood neighborhood found a 24-year-old man bleeding on the sidewalk in the 5700 block of South Hermitage Avenue.
The unidentified man was shot in the chest and arm, and paramedics took to Stroger Hospital where he later died, police said.
In other overnight incidents, a 32-year-old man was shot and wounded in the buttock and the leg around 10 p.m. in the 2800 block of South Homan Avenue; a 29-year-old man was shot in the arm and chest around 11:30 p.m. in the 6900 block of South Dorchester Avenue; a 20-year-old man was shot in the leg while walking with a friend just before 3 a.m. in the 2400 block of West 72nd Street; and a 27-year-old woman was shot in the leg around 3:45 a.m. in the 1000 block of West 115th Street.
