3 Dead, 5 Wounded By Gunfire Over 12-Hour Period
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Conditions were pleasant overnight, but violence spilled onto the streets of Chicago in many areas – leaving three people dead and at least five others wounded from 4 p.m. Monday to 4 a.m. Tuesday.
At 4:53 p.m. Monday, a 76-year-old man died of a gunshot wound in the backyard of his home in the 8100 block of South Prairie Avenue in the Chatham neighborhood. But it was not clear whether the man, identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office as Jessie Rowd, shot himself or was the victim of a homicide.
Detectives are conducting a death investigation.
Around 8 p.m., a man was shot and killed in what is undoubtedly believed to be a homicide, inside a vehicle in the 900 block of East 79th Street, on the cusp of the Grand Crossing and East Chatham neighborhoods.
Erick Williams, 25, of the 700 bock of East 95th Street, was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital at 8:40 p.m., according to the medical examiner's office.
Another man was shot in the back and killed around 11 p.m. in the 1900 block of West 23rd Street, in the Heart of Chicago section of the Pilsen neighborhood. The as-yet-unidentified 23-year-old man was driven to the University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago, where he was later pronounced dead, authorities said.
At least five other men were wounded in shootings across the city, authorities said.
At 4:43 p.m., an 18-year-old boy was shot in the lower back in the 1500 block of South Pulaski Road in the North Lawndale neighborhood, police said. He was taken in stable condition to Mount Sinai Hospital.
At 5:06 p.m., a 21-year-old man was shot in the left knee in the 9100 block of South St. Lawrence Avenue in the Burnside neighborhood, police said. He was taken in stable condition to Stroger Hospital of Cook County.
About 7:55 p.m., a 23-year-old man was shot twice in the arm and once in the hand when an assailant walked up and shot him inside a parked vehicle in the 7100 block of South State Street, near the Dan Ryan Expressway in the Park Manor neighborhood, police said. He was taken in stable condition to Stroger Hospital.
About 10:45 p.m., a 22-year-old bystander was shot in the leg in the 6300 block of North Ridge Boulevard, on the cusp of the Edgewater and Rogers Park neighborhoods, after he saw two men arguing across the street, then heard gunfire. He walked into Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston and is in good condition.
About 2:40 a.m., a 27-year-old man was walking down the sidewalk of the 5900 block of South Morgan Street in the Englewood neighborhood about 2:40 a.m. when he heard gunfire, police said. He was shot in the hand and arm and is in good condition at Stroger Hospital.
No arrests had been made in any of the shootings as of Tuesday, police said.
