Chicago's Last Komen Cancer Walk Steps Off In Northbrook
3-Day Cancer Walk Begins In Northbrook
NORTHBROOK, Ill. (CBS) -- Hundreds of people were gathering Friday for the start of the final Susan G. Komen 3-Day breast cancer walk in the Chicago area.
WBBM Newsradio's Dave Berner reports the 60-mile trek to help the fight to end breast cancer kicks off on Friday in Northbrook, and ends Sunday at Soldier Field.
The Susan G. Komen Foundation is ending the walk in Chicago and six other cities after this year's event.
Approximately 800 people began their three-day journey Friday at Northbrook Court Shopping Center.
The first leg will be a 21-mile walk from Northbrook, to the Chicago Botanic Gardens, through Glencoe, Winnetka and Northfield, to Glenview.
They'll walk another 20 miles on Saturday, and then 16.5 on Sunday.
For all those taking part, the stories are similar, though no less poignant.
"I lost my mom to cancer several years ago. So, you know, cancer's cancer, no matter what type it is, and we're just here to support the cause," one woman said.
Another woman said she was there to support several people close to her who have been struck by cancer.
"I'm here to support my girlfriend Christie; and my mother-in-law passed away from breast cancer; my nana; my cousin; way too much in my family, so it's very close to my heart," she said.
There were also many men taking part in the walk, supporting wives, mothers, and other loved ones who died or suffer from breast cancer.
