22 Displaced In 3-Alarm Maywood Fire
CHICAGO (STMW) - Twenty-two people were displaced from their homes when an extra-alarm blaze damaged two apartment buildings in west suburban Maywood Friday night.
Firefighters were first called to the fire in the 1000 block of South 11th Avenue about 10 p.m. and battled the flames for more than two hours, Maywood Fire Dept. Lt. David Krefft said. Two extra alarms were called as crews responded.
Two adjacent three-story apartment buildings were left uninhabitable after the fire, Krefft said. One building was heavily damaged, while the apartment just north of it was only minimally involved.
Red Cross officials and family members are taking care of the fifteen adults and seven children left homeless because of the fire, Krefft said.
Crews remain at the scene investigating the cause of the fire early Saturday. Officials could not yet say what sparked the blaze, or in which building it started.
