$20M Bond For Woman In Murder Of Hammond Teen

MARKHAM, Ill. (CBS) -- Bond has been set at $20 million for a Dolton woman charged with killing a teenager, who she believed had fought with her brother and later fired shots at a relative's home in Calumet City.

Tiffany Elkins, 32, is charged with first-degree murder and five-counts of attempted murder. Bond was set at $20 million at a hearing at the Markham courthouse on Thursday.

Elkins and Marcelles Mitchen, 32, of Chicago, were arrested at a Lansing hotel and charged Tuesday in the Aug. 19 murder of 18-year-old Dvonte Harris of Hammond, Ind., a release from Calumet City police said.

Mitchen, who is on parole, is charged with obstruction of justice and aiding and abetting a fugitive, the release said.

Bond for Mitchen was set at $50,000 on Thursday. Both Elkins and Mitchen will appear for preliminary hearings on Sept. 14.

The incident started Aug. 19 when Elkins' younger brother was involved in a fight during the football game. Several hours later, multiple shots were fired near the family's Calumet City home, but no one was injured.

After Elkins learned of the attacks, she decided to retaliate, police said. She found out who was involved in the fight and drove around the neighborhood, looking for those she thought responsible.

She found Harris, along with a group of teens, on Douglas Avenue, and after asking him his nickname, she fired several shots, hitting Harris once in the back of the neck.

Harris was pronounced dead at 11:50 p.m. Friday at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Harris, 18, of 124 1/2 Sibley St. in Hammond was found shot in the back of the neck at 630 Douglas Ave. in Calumet City, according to the medical examiner's office. An autopsy ruled his death a homicide.

Police said the cooperation from multiple witnesses helped find the offender.

Police could not provide further details on Mitchen's involvement in the case.
