2013 Astros Most Profitable Team In MLB's History
(CBS) You gotta hand it to Astros owner Jim Crane.
According to a report from Forbes Magazine, Crain's Astros, those of the 43-86 record, are on pace to make an estimated $99 million in operating income this season - more than any team in baseball's history.
In fact, that $99 million is almost as much as the estimated operating income of the previous six World Series championship teams combined.
Forbes points to the Astros reduced payroll expenses and soaring TV revenues as the reason for the large profit margins.
The team opened the 2013 season with a $26 million payroll - down from the $56 million payroll in 2011 when Crane took control of the Astros - and has since cut that number to $13 million.
