2 Struck, Killed By Metra Train Near Cicero Station

UPDATED 06/21/11 6:04 a.m.

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Metra trains are back up and running Tuesday morning, after an accident on the city's West Side that left two people dead.

As CBS 2's Susanna Song reports, authorities have confirmed that two people died in the crash about half a mile east of the Metra Cicero BNSF station, which is located at 25th Place just off Cicero Avenue in Cicero.

One man, 30, was dead on the scene, while another, 53, later died of his injuries at Stroger Hospital of Cook County, police said.

Police were on the scene for several hours searching for a possible third victim. It is not known if they ever found any evidence of one, or if they will continue the search.

Police also have not said what caused the crash.

The accident happened on railway property, but not at a crossing. Thus, it is unclear what the victims were doing in the area.

Metra has confirmed an outbound BNSF train heading to Aurora around 11:50 p.m. Monday struck two men.

The train, No. 1299, had been scheduled to arrive in Aurora at 12:55 a.m., but it stopped for an hour so authorities could investigate. It was then canceled, and passengers were put on another train, No. 1325, which was the final train for the night.

As of 5 a.m., Metra trains were moving again as normal.
