2 Shot To Death In Apparent Home Invasion On South Side
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Two men were shot to death following an apparent home invasion Sunday morning in the South Chicago neighborhood.
The names of the two victims have yet to be released, but a source with knowledge of the investigation says the two men were shot execution-style, meaning it's highly unlikely that this was a random attack.
The two men were shot to death around 5 a.m. in their second-floor apartment, above the J Carolina wholesale hosiery shop, south of 91st on Commercial.
One of wounded victims went to Samuel Avante's apartment there, seeking help.
"He came into my room, he was shot or stabbed, he straggled, passed out and died," said Avante.
Avante called for assistance. Another neighbor knew the two men and says they were peddling electronics.
"They were trying to sell computers or something. They got robbed for it. They didn't want to give it up, so they got shot," said Deaontae Edwards.
During the day, the South Commercial strip is often bustling, but small businesses say crime is not unusual and they focus on precautions.
Steel bars with padlocks protect stores that are closed, with strict rules about hoodies, backpacks and shades for some that are open.
A Boost Mobile store isn't the only one with a buzzer on the door. Commercial is the South Chicago neighborhood's main street.
Avante suggests the two victims' commercial activity may not have been altogether legal.
"These people were buying technology in the neighborhood, laptops, stolen laptops, and deleting them, and stolen cellphones from everybody in the neighborhood and some deal went bad," said Avante.
The names of the two victims have yet to be released, but it's believed they were in their 20's or 30's.
