2 Shot, Critically Wounded In Ukrainian Village Robberies
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Two people were shot and critically wounded within minutes of each other overnight in the fashionable Ukrainian Village neighborhood.
The first shooting happened on Damen Avenue just north of Augusta Boulevard around 1:25 a.m. Friday. A woman was shot in the hip and abdomen, police said.
The woman was taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County, where she was reported in critical condition.
Just five minutes later around two blocks away, a 27-year-old man was shot in the face in the 2100 block of West Thomas Street, near Hoyne Avenue. He was also taken to Stroger Hospital.
Both victims were shot during robberies. Details of the robbery in the first incident were not available, but in the second, the victim told detectives he was walking home on Thomas Street when a man approached him from behind, demanded his money and took his backpack.
Reports do not indicate that the victim resisted the robber, but he was still shot in the face. The robber then ran off, police said.
Detectives were trying to determine whether one person committed both robberies and shootings, police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer said, adding that no one was in custody early Friday.
