2 Police Officers Hurt When Car Hits Hydrant
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Two Chicago Police officers suffered minor injuries Tuesday evening when their squad car skidded into a fire hydrant in the Little Village neighborhood.
The officers were responding to a call of shots fired around 7:30 p.m. when the unmarked squad car struck a fire hydrant in the 2400 block of South St. Louis Avenue, police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines said.
Airbags in the squad car deployed, and both officers were taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County as a precaution, Gaines said. Weather conditions at the time contributed to the crash, he said.
Wet roadways in the city turned slick and icy late Tuesday into early Wednesday as temperatures fell, prompting the city's Department of Streets and Sanitation to deploy 174 snow-fighting trucks to treat the freezing pavement.
Both officers had been treated and released from the hospital as of 2:45 a.m. Wednesday, Gaines said.
