1 Dead, 2 Police Officers Hurt In Crash
UPDATED 01/10/11 6:15 a.m.
CHICAGO (CBS) -- One person is dead and four others – including two Chicago Police officers – were hurt overnight in a crash on the city's South Side.
As CBS 2's Susanna Song reports, the officers were reported in good condition after the crash, which happened around 2 a.m. in the 6800 block of South Indiana Avenue.
But three others were initially reported in critical condition.
One man later died of his injuries. Shawn Garrett, 25, of the 6300 block of South Normal Avenue, was initially pronounced dead at 2:49 a.m. at Stroger Hospital of Cook County.
Just after the crash, the victims were carried from the scene on stretchers into ambulances.
In the crash, a black sedan with three people inside ran a red light and struck a police squad car in the intersection, police News Affairs Amina Greer said. The passenger vehicle went on to strike a pole, Greer said.
The car was severely damaged, and witnesses said they couldn't believe what they saw.
"I heard a loud boom; thought it was something upstairs. I came out and saw the car wrapped around, and a lot of police officers started coming; ambulances," one man said. "Crazy, crazy."
The squad car sustained front-end damage. Police say at least two officers were in the squad car, and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Three people were transported from the scene to Stroger Hospital, one to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and one to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Fire Media Affairs Chief Quention Curtis said. Two more people were taken to Christ Hospital in fair-to-serious condition, he said.
It is unclear how fast the offending car was going.
No charges or citations had been issued as of early Monday, Greer said.
