2 men shot, killed in one incident in East Chicago, Indiana

Two men were killed in a shooting early Sunday morning in East Chicago, Indiana.

East Chicago police said at 1:48 a.m., their officers were called for a ShotSpotter detection of gunfire outside OJ's Game Over bar in the 700 block of West 151st Street. The technology detected 17 rounds fired, and then 15 more rounds seconds later at the same spot.

Officers found two men lying on the ground, both with semiautomatic handguns next to their bodies, police said.

Both victims had suffered multiple gunshot wounds to their bodies. One was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was taken to Powers Health St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, where he also died.

While the motive remains unclear, police do believe there is another shooter still on the run.

"No respect was given. That's a residential area. Several vehicles were hit, several homes. And we know somebody saw something. There were leaving the bar and people were in that bar," said East Chicago Police Chief Jose Rivera. "We can't do this alone. Our officers responded within seconds, but we can't be everywhere, but we know people were there."

The shooting wasn't the first time East Chicago Police Chief Jose Rivera's team has investigated cases at the bar.

Several open investigations remain. This time, it wasn't contained to the address — the radius of damage and potential injury was significant.

"Homes hit by bullets … there are cars that are shattered that are just drivable. They were tires that we've seen that have bullet holes in them," said Lisette Guillen.

"There was no respect for anybody on that block last night," said Andrew Holmes.

The Lake County Homicide task force is investigating. The chief says both victims are East Chicago residents — one is 20 years old, the other is 36.

He said they are still working on notifying next of kin.

Anyone with information about this double homicide should call the East Chicago Police Department Tip Line at 219-391-8500.
