2 Men Shot Dead In North Austin
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Two men were shot and killed early Tuesday on the city's West Side -- one of whom was reportedly visiting from Atlanta for his grandfather's funeral.
Chaves Wilson, 23, and Roy Smith, 25, were both shot in the head about 1:12 a.m. in the 1200 block of North Mason Avenue, just north of Division Street, in the Austin neighborhood. Someone approached the men on foot and shot them, according to police.
Wilson and Smith were both pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
Smith's mother, Yoletta Williams, talked with CBS 2 at the Medical Examiner's office. She said her son was visiting from Atlanta for her father's funeral on Saturday.
Smith was supposed to take a bus back to Atlanta later Tuesday morning, Williams told CBS 2's Susanna Song.
Williams said she sent her son to Atlanta when he was 16 to "get him away from Chicago violence."
No one was in custody as of 6:25 a.m. Tuesday.
