2 Killed, 7 Wounded By Gunfire In 8 Hours In Chicago
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Two men were killed and seven others – including three boys just 14 years old – were wounded in shootings in Chicago within a period of eight hours Wednesday night and early Thursday morning.
The first deadly shooting happened before sundown a few blocks from Washington Park. Ornette Massey, 38, was shot multiple times in the 5600 block of South Michigan Avenue at 6:30 p.m., and was pronounced dead afterward at Stroger Hospital of Cook County.
Another man, 40, was also wounded in the shooting, police said. That man was taken in stable condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital with gunshot wounds to the hip and buttocks.
Then around 1:15 a.m., Miguel Cruz, 28, was shot in the chest in the 2500 block of West Thomas Street in the Humboldt Park neighborhood, authorities said. Cruz was taken to Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center, where he died at 2 a.m., the medical examiner's office said.
Another man in his 20s was also wounded in the same shooting. He was listed in good condition at Saints Mary and Elizabeth with a gunshot wound to the shoulder, police said.
Among the at least seven people wounded were two teenage boys who were shot Wednesday evening in the Southwest Side's Chicago Lawn neighborhood.
About 6:40 p.m., the two 14-year-old boys were in the 2500 block of West 64th Street when a vehicle drove by and shots were fired, police said.
One boy was shot in the back and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, police said. The other boy was shot in the left leg and taken to University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital.
About 7:05 p.m., a 33-year-old man was shot in the left leg in the 5000 block of South May Street in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, and took himself to Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Center, police said.
About 15 minutes later, a 21-year-old man was shot in the right leg in the 7700 block of South Bennett Avenue, in the South Shore neighborhood, police said.
About 8:25 p.m., a 14-year-old boy was shot in the left hand in the 6900 block of South Western Avenue, and taken in good condition to Holy Cross Hospital.
No one was reported in custody for any of the shootings as of Thursday morning.
