2 Hurt When SUV Flips Over On Lake Shore Drive
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Two people were injured Friday morning when their sport-utility vehicle knocked down a light pole and a tree, and flipped over, on Lake Shore Drive near the Stevenson Expressway.
As CBS 2's Kris Habermehl reports, the a driver lost control of the SUV on northbound Lake Shore Drive alongside the off-ramp from the Stevenson Expressway. A light pole and a tree came down, and the SUV ended up lying on its roof.
As of around 6:30 a.m., the ambulance was preparing to transport two people to the hospital. They were triaged on the grassy berm alongside the northbound lanes of Lake Shore Drive.
The victims were taken in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Richard Rosado said. Police later said the two appeared to be in good condition.
Traffic is split at that point on Lake Shore Drive alongside McCormick Place. The accident happened before the merge with Stevenson Expressway traffic, and thus, Lake Shore Drive was closed at the merge for drivers who had already been on the Drive coming from the south.
But motorists entering the Drive from the Stevenson Expressway were able to continue north onto Lake Shore Drive.
One lane of northbound Lake Shore Drive had reopened by 6:45 a.m.
Still, Lake Shore Drive was backed up solid as far south as 31st Street, and the Stevenson was backed up all the way to the Chinatown feeder.
Chicago Police, Illinois State Police and the Fire Department were on the scene.
