2 Dead In I-65 Crash
DEMOTTE, Ind. (STMW) - Two people were killed when the vehicle they were inside collided with a semi truck Friday morning on I-65 in northwest Indiana, according to Indiana State Police.
The wreck occurred on I-65, three miles south of DeMotte in Jasper County, according to a release from ISP. By 8 a.m., all north and southbound lanes were reopened.
The driver was identified as John Miroballi, 68, and the passenger was 46-year-old Jeannie S. Miroballi, according to a release from Indiana State Police.
About 5:30 a.m., a 2004 Chevrolet was southbound on I-65 when for unknown reasons it left the roadway, went down into the grassy median, then came back up on the northbound side, where it turned around to face north, according to the release.
Michael D. Ward, 47 of Winnipeg, Manitoba, was driving a 2001 International semi northbound when he saw another semi ahead in the left lane change lanes quickly to go into the right lane in front of him, according to the release.
That semi immediately swerved back to the left again and the semi driven by Ward hit the Chevrolet in the right lane, the release said.
The truck and Chevrolet went into the grassy median and the driver and the front-seat passenger of the car were pronounced dead at the scene by the Jasper County Coroner. Cause of death was massive blunt force trauma, according to the release.
The semi is owned by R.S. Harris of Manitoba, Canada. It was pulling a flatbed trailer loaded with building equipment. No load was lost and Ward was not injured, the release said.
