2 Dead From I-57 Rollover Crash
COUNTRY CLUB HILLS (STMW) -- Two young people were killed and another three injured when the SUV they were in -- which state police say was traveling at a very high speed -- left the road and rolled over on I-57 in the south suburbs Sunday morning.
The accident happened just before 5 a.m. on northbound I-57 at approximately 186th Street, an Illinois State Police District Chicago trooper said. The crash occurred near Country Club Hills.
A 17-year-old girl -- identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office as Avocean Lewis, of 18806 Oakwood Ave. in Country Club Hills -- was pronounced dead at 5:49 a.m. at St. James Hospital and Health Centers in Olympia Fields.
A 16-year-old boy -- identified as Tyon Groves, of 115 Cloverleaf Rd. in Matteson, was dead on the scene, according to the medical examiner's office.
The Mazda SUV they were in "was traveling at a very high rate of speed" when it left the roadway and rolled over, according to the trooper. The two who were killed were the driver and a front seat passenger, a state police master sergeant said.
Illinois State Police continue Sunday afternoon to investigate the crash, so it was undetermined as to whether alcohol was a factor, the trooper said.
