2 Dead, 5 Wounded In South Shore Shooting

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Two people were killed, and five others were wounded, in a shooting at a South Shore neighborhood liquor store Sunday evening.
The shooting happened at 6:56 p.m. at the Budget Food and Liquor Store in the 2500 block of East 79th Street, said police News Affairs Officer Daniel O'Brien, citing preliminary information.
Responding paramedics found two people dead on the scene and five teenagers wounded, fire officials said.

Police say a beige vehicle pulled up to next to the liquor store, and someone inside opened fire.
Responding paramedics found two people dead on the scene, and five teenagers wounded. Jamal Harris, 19, was killed inside the store, and Greg Glinsey, 61, was killed outside.
Five others survived the shooting – ranging in age from 13 to 16.
The most seriously injured was a 14-year-old boy, who was taken to Comer Children's Hospital at the University of Chicago in critical condition after being shot in the abdomen. The other four surviving victims were shot in the leg, and were taken to Jackson Park Medical Center and Advocate Trinity Hospital.
"I heard the gunshots, I came down, and the police were pulling bodies out the store. He was laying on the ground," one man said.
Police say because there were so many people outside at the time, it is unclear who was the intended target.
Clara Lewis, supervisor at the Excellent Way Church, expressed "sadness for the children looking out the window. They were sad. They were scared."
Lewis put together a memorial outside the liquor store, on behalf of the 16 women and children at the Christian shelter next door who heard the gunshots Sunday evening.
Lewis said when she came outside Monday morning, balloons were already tied to a traffic sign pole outside. Someone left them there with a signed card for Glinsey, who went by the nickname "Alamo."
"He was just an innocent bystander, you know," said Lynette Bell, who had known "Alamo" for 20 years.
"He's just a friend of the family, and I've been knowing him for years. I see him all the time when I come up here to the store, and I was sad to hear about that – a great loss," Bell said. "He just went to see his son sing in church yesterday, and then come back around here, and this is what happened."
A schoolmate of the younger victim's lived in the shelter, Lewis said.
"One of the children – the little girls that go here – knew the guy that got killed; one of the little boys. He went to school with her," she said.
Lewis' memorial – composed of a vase with roses and a plush toy bunny at the foot of the sign pole – is also a reminder that someone is watching out for her.
"God protected me," she said, "I came in five minutes before the shooting started; I just left the store."
Police say they are pursuing leads, and trying to figure out if the drive-by shooting was gang-related. Police say it was not a random attack.
Less than 10 minutes after the liquor store shooting, police say a 15-year-old boy was shot in the leg on the very same block. Police do not believe the incidents are related.
