2 Dead, 3 Seriously Injured In Lyons Crash

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Two people were killed and three others were seriously injured when two cars crashed head-on early Sunday in west suburban Lyons.
According to the Lyons Fire Department, the crash happened at 2:27 a.m. on Illinois Route 171 near 47th Street. Police said a vehicle traveling in the wrong lane struck another car in the southbound lanes of Route 171.
A Honda CRV with a family of four inside and a Buick Park Avenue with only one male occupant, crashed and paramedics responded at 2:33 a.m., said Lyons Fire Dept. Chief Gordon Nord.
Two females and two males were inside the SUV, two of whom were "younger'' said Nord.
"We found two people on the ground ejected and two still pinned in one vehicle and one person pinned inside the other one,'' Nord said.
Five additional ambulances were requested and all five victims were taken in serious condition to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, said Nord.
A boy between the ages of 7 and 10 was pronounced dead there at 3:14 a.m., while a 40-year-old man who was the sole occupant of the other car was pronounced dead at 3:36 a.m., according to the spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
Several pieces of rescue equipment, including two cutters and two rescue tools, were brought to the scene. No fire occurred but the crash caused "substantial fluids" such as antifreeze and oil to spill over the roadway.
Both vehicles sustained severe front end and other major damage and had to be towed from the scene.
