2 Dead, 22 Wounded In Citywide Shootings Overnight
CHICAGO (CBS/STMW) -- Two men were killed and 22 other people were wounded in citywide violence since Thursday evening, including a shooting in a South Side park that injured 13 people, police said.
A 3-year-old boy was among 13 people wounded when two gunmen opened fire on a crowded basketball court in the Back of the Yards neighborhood around 10:15 p.m. Thursday. Witnesses said the gunmen drove up in a gray car, then walked up to the basketball court at Cornell Square Park, near 51st and Wood streets, and opened fire.
Earlier, a 36-year-old man was fatally shot Thursday night on the same South Side Auburn Gresham neighborhood block where he lived, authorities said. Johnny Tinsey was shot in the chest about 6:50 p.m. in the 7700 block of South Sangamon Avenue. Tinsey, of the 7700 block of South Sangamon Avenue, was pronounced dead at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County at 7:37 p.m., the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said.
Rubin Austin, 25, died after being shot in the chest at 12:47 a.m. in the 3600 block of West Augusta Boulevard of the Humboldt Park neighborhood, authorities said. Austin, of the 1100 block of North Ridgeway Avenue, was pronounced dead at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County at 1:38 a.m., the medical examiner's office said.
Nine other people were wounded in shootings:
◆ A man, whose age was not available, was shot in the leg about 2 a.m. in the 6300 block of South Eberhart Street in the Woodlawn neighborhood. Further details were not available.
◆ Two men were wounded during an armed robbery early Friday in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood on the South Side.
A 23-year-old man was walking in the 100 block of East 75th Street about 2 a.m. when an armed man exited a white vehicle and announced a robbery, police said. The 23-year-old produced a handgun and the two exchanged gunfire.
The 23-year-old man was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
The armed robber, 28, was taken in "stable" condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County with a gunshot wound to the leg.
◆ Shortly before midnight, a 29-year-old woman was shot multiple times in the 7900 block of South Wood Street in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood, police said. She was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
◆ A 21-year-old man was shot in both legs at 10:30 p.m. in the 5500 block of West North Avenue in the Humboldt Park neighborhood when an assailant fired several shots and fled, police said. He was hospitalized at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.
◆ About 7:15 p.m., a 28-year-old man was shot in the abdomen in the 5700 block of South Aberdeen Street, police said.
◆ On the Southwest Side, two men in their 20s were shot in the 3800 block of West 57th Place about 6:50 p.m. police said. One man was shot in the abdomen and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, police said. The other man suffered a graze wound to the thigh.
◆ The violence began about 6:35 p.m. in Englewood, when a teenage boy was shot in the foot in the 700 block of West 72nd Street, police said. His exact age was not immediately available. The boy was taken in good condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
No one was in custody for any of the shootings. Detectives were investigating.
