Community Activist's Son Shot In Englewood
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The son of a well-known Englewood community activist was wounded Monday evening, when he and another man were shot in the Englewood neighborhood.
Hal Baskin Jr., 25, was shot in the abdomen in the 6600 block of South Peoria Street around 6:30 p.m. Monday. His family said he was in fair condition Tuesday morning at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of cook County. Another man suffered a graze wound to the head, and was being treated at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
Baskin's father, former gang member Hal Baskin, is now executive director of the PEACE Community Center, at 64th and Peoria.
Police sources said Baskin Jr. has gang ties. His father asked that there be no retaliatory action for the shooting.
"Hal is calling for calm, peace and no retaliatory action. The family is asking that the police department be allowed to do their job," the family said in a written statement.
In May, Hal Baskin lost his great-nephew, 21-year-old Ronald Baskin, to gun violence, when Ronald was shot and killed as he left his great-grandmothers house on Mother's Day.
Hal Baskin also has lost a brother and two other nephews to gun violence over the years.
The circumstances of Monday's shooting were not known, and Area South detectives were investigating.
