2 Burlgary Suspects Killed In Crash During Police Chase In Gary
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Two home burglary suspects were killed and a third was critically hurt as they fled police on Wednesday in Gary, Ind.
WBBM Newsradio's Mike Krauser reports big chunks were gouged out of two trees in the 4000 block of Monroe Street in Gary, evidence of the violent crash that happened as police were chasing two burglary suspects.
The suspects' car slammed into two trees, killing two of the suspects. A third was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
Burglary Suspects Die In Car Wreck
The mangled car was loaded onto a flatbed after the wreck.
Gary Police Cpl. Gabrielle King said the chase lasted 2 minutes 3 seconds.
"It's just a sad situation," she said.
King said she didn't know how fast the suspects were driving at the time of the crash, "but based on the amount of damage, they were speeding, no doubt about that."
The car was barely recognizable after the wreck.
The chase started shortly after 10 a.m., when an officer responded to a 911 call about a home burglary about six blocks away, and spotted the suspects, who fled from police.
"In reference to a break-in in progress in the 4400 block of Connecticut street, the first officer on the scene saw a gray Dodge Stratus, occupied three times," she said. "She also saw another guy, and he kind of looked at her, and he ran on foot. They, in the meantime, took off in the vehicle."
Lake County Sheriff's police were investigating the crash, while Gary police were investigating the burglary.
