3 Killed, 40 Wounded In Weekend Shootings Across Chicago
(STMW) --Three men were killed and at least 40 other people — including a 10-year-old girl — have been wounded in shootings across Chicago this weekend, police said.
The latest homicide happened Sunday afternoon in North Lawndale on the West Side, according to Chicago Police.
About 3 p.m., a 24-year-old man shot in the back and shoulder in the 3900 block of West Roosevelt was taken to a hospital where he later died, police said. The Cook County medical examiner's office could not immediately confirm the death.
Additional details were not immediately available.
Early Sunday, a 23-year-old man was gunned down in Pilsen on the Southwest Side.
He and a 24-year-old man were driving in the 1100 West block of 18th Street about 3:20 a.m. when someone walked out of an alley and opened fire, police said. Both were shot in the head.
The younger man, later identified as Abraham Barrera, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he died at 5:33 a.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office. Barrera lived in the 4100 block of West 58th Place.
The 24-year-old was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, police said.
Investigators think the shooting was gang-related.
The weekend's other first shooting happened in a Bronzeville neighborhood apartment complex Saturday on the South Side.
About noon, a 25-year-old man was arguing with a 34-year-old man inside the apartment in the 700 block of East 47th Street when the older man opened fire, police said.
The younger man suffered three gunshot wounds and was taken to Stroger, where he was pronounced dead at 12:43 p.m., authorities said. Officials withheld his name Sunday.
Police identified the shooter as Marvin Lee. He initially called for help saying the other man had broken into his home, but detectives determined they knew each other and had an altercation prior to the shooting.
Lee, who lives on the block where the shooting happened, was charged with murder and scheduled to appear in bond court Sunday.
In the most recent non-fatal shooting, a 30-year-old man was shot in the hand while standing outside about 2:30 p.m. in the 5200 block of South Lowe on the South Side. He heard shots and felt pain, but declined medical treatment at the scene, police said.
Earlier Sunday afternoon, a 10-year-old girl was among three people shot in the Woodlawn neighborhood on the South Side.
She was outside with an 18-year-old woman and 19-year-old man about 12:50 p.m. in the 1400 block of East 66th Place when a gunman walked out of a vacant lot and started firing, police said.
A bullet grazed the girl's neck and she was taken in good condition to Comer Children's Hospital, police said.
The man was shot in the back and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition. The woman suffered a graze wound to the calf was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, where her condition was stabilized, police said.
Police said the woman and girl were not the intended targets.
In addition to the Pilsen shooting, gunfire left six other wounded in separate shootings within a span of two-and-a-half hours early Sunday.
About 5:50 a.m., a 22-year-old woman was shot in the West Garfield Park neighborhood. She was standing near her vehicle in the 3900 block of West Polk when she heard gunfire and felt pain, police said. The woman suffered a gunshot wound to the back and drove herself to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she was listed in guarded condition.
About the same time, a 24-year-old woman and 33-year-old man were sitting in a vehicle parked in Uptown's 1000 block of West Wilson when another car pulled up and someone got out and started shooting, police said. She was shot once in the buttocks and he was struck twice in the shoulder and back. Both were taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where her condition stabilized and he was listed as fair, police said.
About 4:20 a.m., a man was injured in a West Englewood neighborhood drive-by shooting on the South Side. The man, 19, was walking on the sidewalk in the 5800 block of South Laflin when a black vehicle drove by and someone inside opened fire, police said. He was shot in the shoulder and was taken in good condition to Holy Cross Hospital. A police source said the man is a documented gang member.
At the same time, a 28-year-old man was shot and critically wounded in the Longwood Manor neighborhood on the South Side. He was shot in the abdomen about 4:20 a.m. in the 9600 block of South Morgan, police said. The man was taken in critical condition to Christ Medical Center.
Less than 30 minutes earlier, a man was injured in a Far South Side Roseland neighborhood shooting. The 29-year-old was in the 11400 block of South Yale about 4 a.m. when someone walked up behind him and fired shots, police said. He suffered a gunshot wound to the back and was taken to Christ, where his condition was stabilized.
At least 29 other people have been shot in the city since 3:50 p.m. Friday.
Additionally, a Chicago Police officer shot and killed a man who charged at officers with a sharp object about 9 p.m. in Humboldt Park's 900 block of North Central Park, officials said.
