18-Year-Old Dead After West Side Shooting

CHICAGO (STMW) - An 18-year-old man died early Saturday morning after being shot Friday night in the West Side Austin neighborhood.

Ewonte Butler, 18, of the 500 block of North Laramie Ave., was pronounced dead at 1:53 a.m. at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

The shooting happened about 7:13 p.m. in the 5400 block of West Washington Boulevard, police News Affairs Officer Darryl Baety said.

Butler was shot twice in the back, police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said. He was standing on the street when someone opened fire, striking him in the back, Alfaro said. He was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in critical condition, according to Alfaro.

No one was in custody as of late Friday.

Grand Central Area detectives are investigating.
