17-Year-Old Fenger Student Shot In Head Dies

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 17-year-old Fenger High School Student shot in the head during a Monday night drive-by shooting in West Pullman has died.

Marqwell Seabron was two blocks from his home, walking with three or four friends on the 11800 block of South Perry, when a gunman fired at him from a passing red car around 9:30 p.m., police and neighbors said.

Seabron, 17, of 143 W. 117th St., was pronounced dead Friday at 12:35 a.m. Friday at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

The friends tried to drag him down the street to safety after he was struck in the head by one of the four bullets, but a bleeding Seabron collapsed within a few yards, neighbors said.

His family remained at his side at Christ Hospital and had taken hope from the fact that he moved his foot when his grandmother squeezed his hand Tuesday, friends said.

Police have not made any arrests in connection with the shooting as of early Friday, police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said.

Seabron had been arrested previously but had no known gang affiliation, police said.

He had been arrested for fighting, "but nothing more than that," his brother-in-law Jeffery Meauhead said, describing him as a basketball lover who went to church with his grandmother every Sunday.

Detectives told Seabron's family they believe the shooting may be gang-related, Meauhead said.

His sister, Dominique Williams, said Seabron was not in a gang "as far as we know," but added that he was with a Gangster Disciple when he was shot and "was the type of guy who felt he had to protect his reputation on the street."

A red car which matched the description of the one used during the attack was recovered later near 117th Street and Yale Avenue, police said.

Fenger hit international headlines following the 2009 beating death of student Derrion Albert in an after-school fight. More recently varsity football coach Cassius Chambers was charged with threatening violence against a student accused of theft.
