16-Year-Old Shot Dead On West Side

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Investigators are searching for a suspect in the deadly shooting of a 16-year-old boy on the city's West Side.

The shooting happened about 5:50 p.m. on the 900 block of North Harding Avenue, according to police News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala.

Police said the boy was shot in the abdomen and taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County, where his condition was initially stable. But the boy's condition deteriorated and he died at the hospital, Zala said.

John Washington, of the 4100 block of West Potomac Avenue, was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital at 6:46 p.m., according to a Cook County Medical Examiner's office spokesman. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

The shooting took place about a mile away from Washington's home.

No one is in custody and Harrison Area detectives are conducting a homicide investigation. The motive for the shooting has not been learned.
