16 Apply For 3 Vacant City Council Seats
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Mayor Richard M. Daley is taking a closer look at 16 people who hope to fill three vacant slots in the City Council for the rest of the term.
The 4th Ward aldermanic seat became open this week when 19-year veteran Toni Preckwinkle left to take over as Cook County Board president.
The 28th Ward seat opened up when Ald. Ed Smith retired, and the 38th Ward seat was left vacant when Ald. Thomas Allen was sworn in as a judge this week.
Whoever Daley appoints would serve out the unexpired term that ends May 16 of next year.
Of the applicants, neither seeking the 4th Ward seat is running in February for a full term, while six of the 12 people on the ballot for the 38th Ward are applying for appointment to the seat to finish the unexpired term, the Chicago Tribune reported.
The 4th Ward includes parts of the South Side's Hyde Park, Kenwood, Oakland and Bronzeville neighborhoods. The 28th Ward includes much of the West Side's South Austin and North Lawndale neighborhoods. The 38th Ward is located on the Northwest Side, and includes parts of the Old Irving Park, Portage Park and Dunning neighborhoods.
