Two Injured By Lawndale Hit-And-Run Driver
CHICAGO (STMW) -- The driver of a sport utility vehicle remains in custody after he ran into and critically injured one pedestrain and then hit a second man while fleeing the scene of the first wreck early Sunday in the Lawndale neighborhood.
At 12:45 a.m., a pedestrian was struck by a man driving a 1998 Chevrolet Trailblazer in the 3800 block of West Roosevelt Road, police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer said.
The driver continued west and struck a second man walking in the 3900 block of West Roosevelt Road, Greer said.
"When he was trying to get away, he hit the other guy,'' said a Harrison District police lieutenant.
Both victims were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital with one person in critical condition and the other in "stable" condition.
The man struck first was the most seriously injured, and he is suffering from bleeding on the brain, said the lieutenant.
Police officers pulled the SUV over about two blocks away and took the man into custody, Greer said. Alcohol was believed to be a factor.
No charges have been filed as of 9 a.m., but the driver remains in custody.
The Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.
