13-Year-Old Girl Dies After Hit-And-Run Crash
UPDATED 06/01/12 3:30 p.m.
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 13-year-old girl has died after a hit-and-run crash overnight that left two cars mangled on the city's West Side.
As CBS 2's Susanna Song reports, the crash at Central Avenue and Washington Boulevard in the South Austin neighborhood also injured two other teens.
The family Sade McGee said the 6th-grader died after being in a coma at the hospital.
The car in which Sade was riding was stopped at a red light heading west on Washington Boulevard, when it was rear-ended by another fast-moving vehicle around 8:45 p.m. Thursday, police said.
The car was crushed from behind, and was left severely mangled and crumpled.
Sade initially was taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital of Cook County. Sade's sister and her boyfriend, both 18, were also taken to the same hospital in good condition, police told the Sun-Times Media Wire.
Meanwhile, the two people in the offending vehicle ran off and ditched their car.
Sade's older sister, Dejai Bland, was driving the car that was smashed.
"When I turned on my left signal, I don't know where the car came from, but I just know my car started spinning like three times and we ended up on a gate, and then I grabbed the steering wheel to regain my consciousness so I wouldn't pass out, and then I started saying, 'Call 911,'" Bland said. "My boyfriend, who was in the passenger seat, he called 911, and then he managed to get out through the window."
The two men who fled the car after crashing it were being questioned by polic, but charges had not been filed.
