13-Year-Old Girl Critically Wounded, Brother Killed In Humboldt Park Shooting
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 13-year-old girl was critically wounded, and her 23-year-old brother was killed, in a shooting in the Humboldt Park neighborhood Tuesday afternoon.
The shooting happened around 4:45 p.m. in the 900 block of North Lawndale Avenue, near Iowa Street, police said.
As CBS 2's Jermont Terry reported, the victims were standing on the porch of their house when out of nowhere, a red vehicle pulled by and someone inside shot them.
It was not clear how many shots were sprayed. But when the gunfire stopped, the 13-year-old girl, Mahogany Walker, was hit.
She was shot in the chest and was taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County in critical condition, police said. She was recovering late Tuesday.
But police said the man who was shot, who family members said was her brother, did not survive. He was shot in the right armpit and chin and was pronounced dead at Stroger.
Mahogany's father, Irwin Wheaton, was furious at the fact that his daughter was caught up in such senseless gun violence in Chicago.
"You want to stop all the shootings? Go get the parents. Allow the parents to discipline their kids," Walker said. "Half of these shooters aren't even 16 or 17."
"In a lot of cases, the parents are children themselves - although they're older children - and now it's become a way of life to a certain degree," said street pastor Donovan Price.
Wheaton said his daughter's condition was improving late Tuesday. A motive was unclear and the shooter remained at large.
Area Four detectives were investigating.
