13 Dead Since 2000 At Facility For Disabled
A new published report says 13 children and young adults have died at a Rogers Park facility for people with profound disabilities – and some say it never had to happen.
The deaths have happened at Alden Village North, 7464 N. Sheridan Rd., and its predecessor facilities, in the past 10 years, the Chicago Tribune reported.
One patient who died was 9-year-old Jeremiah Clark. The boy had been in the home, then called Mosaic Living Center, since he was 4 years old for profound cognitive disabilities, the Tribune reported.
He died on May 21, 2008, of shock, infection and bowel obstruction, and while teachers at his school had found fluids leaking from the hole where his feeding tube was attached, the nursing home didn't call a doctor for two days, the Tribune reported.
The state has cited Alden North for violations since 2000.
The report says some of the deaths might have been prevented if officials at the facility had been more vigilant.
