Girl, 11, Shot And Wounded In West Pullman
CHICAGO (CBS) -- An 11-year-old girl is recovering in the hospital after being shot Sunday night in the West Pullman neighborhood.
She's one of more than 50 people shot during another violent weekend in Chicago.
Police said the girl was shot once in the lower back shortly after 9 p.m. in the 11700 block of South Michigan Avenue.
Witnesses said they saw someone fire shots from a red vehicle.
The girl was taken to Roseland Community Hospital by a family member and was in serious condition.
She's one of at least three children under the age of 18 shot in Chicago over the weekend. None of those three shootings was fatal.
Across Chicago, more than 120 kids and teens under the age of 20 have been shot so far this year.
Last week we told you about Savanah Quintaro, a 14-year-old girl who was shot in the head while walking a dog on Wednesday in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. She died of her injuries on Saturday.
Police have said they are trying something different this summer to fight violence; flooding resources into 15 police beats responsible for 50% of the violence. Police will work with community groups to analyze trends in violence and identify the resources they need. Various city agencies – including the Chicago Public Library, Chicago Park District, Department of Public Health, Chicago Public Schools, th Department of Family and Support Services, and the Department of Streets and Sanitation – also will work with community organizations and faith leaders to identify specific needs.
Given the bloodshed in Chicago this weekend, it remains to be seen if that strategy is working.
