10 Left Homeless In South Side Fire
CHICAGO (CBS) - Ten people have been left homeless, after a fire overnight in an apartment building on busy Stony Island Avenue.
The fire broke out in the overnight hours at 7231 S. Stony Island Ave. Neighbors say the fire was moving quickly when they evacuated their homes.
The neighboring homes had be evacuated because the windows were shattered during the fire, according to fire officials.
"There were firemen on top of the roof axing and picking, and I was so afraid that they weren't moving fast enough with the water," said resident James Morgan. "But everybody did a wonderful job considering, as far as saving our apartment."
The Chicago Department of Family Support Services provided help to the fire victims, including warming buses on the scene.
The fire was out by 1:21 a.m. A cause for the fire was not known early Wednesday.
