When officers arrived, they discovered that one person had been shot in the upper body, and another had been battered by the assailants.

Police say three men – two of them wearing masks – barged into the apartment, armed with a semi-automatic handgun and a shotgun.

The men demanded money and drugs from the occupants.

One person was shot and another was beaten during a struggle with the six people inside. Afterward, the offenders fled in a red sport-utility vehicle, police said.

It was not clear if anything was stolen from the apartment, or why the people there were targeted.

Of the six people in the apartment, three lived there, and three were visiting, Konopek said. The six people included five men and one woman.

Konopek says the offenders had two weapons – a shotgun and some type of handgun. The offenders were masked with bandannas or some type of cloth to conceal their identities.

Konopek says residents have nothing to worry about.

"All indications are that this was not any type or random act of violence. This was something that was targeted for this residence," Konopek said. "And all indications are that the offenders, once the incident was over, that they left the area, and more than likely actually left the village."

The person who was shot was taken to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police continue to investigate.
