1 Man Dead, 1 Wounded In Uptown Shooting

CHICAGO (CBS) -- One man is dead, and another is wounded, after a drive-by shooting in the Uptown neighborhood.
The shooting happened around 8:35 p.m. Sunday in the 1100 block of West Sunnyside Avenue, close to the CTA Red Line, Truman College, and the busy Target store on Broadway, which was closed at the time.
Police say two men were walking down the street near Sunnyside and Clifton avenues when a man inside a car opened fire.
One of the men, identified as Brian Gill, 23, of the 4400 block of North Racine Avenue, was dead on the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
The other man, 21, suffered gunshots to an arm and his side, police News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines said. He was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition, police said.
The Uptown Update blog reported that readers saw the deceased victim's body covered with a blanket in the street.
"Apparently the street is nothing but blue lights, full of first responders, including firefighters from the station on Wilson and Magnolia," Uptown Update said around the time of the shooting.
This was the second shooting in the area on Sunday, following one that happened in broad daylight in the 4500 block of North Sheridan Road.
The man had just walked out of a store, when he was shot in the leg around 4:25 p.m., police said. He was taken to Weiss Memorial Hospital in good condition.
"By the time I arrived, there was a young man down at the corner and Windsor and Hazel...blood trail all the way from Sheridan," an Uptown Update reader wrote, adding that a woman who might have been the victim's mother came to take his bloody shoes, and the car belonging to the shooter fled toward the Aldi store at 4500 N. Broadway.
Uptown Update also said a reader reported gang fighting in the parking lot of the Jewel grocery store at 4335 N. Sheridan Rd. Sunday, and said one of the combatants had fled into the store.
